Understanding Diamond Value

It's universally known that the value of diamonds is constantly changing over time. However, determining the true value of a diamond can be challenging, especially for those who are not familiar with the diamond industry. Fortunately, our online Diamond Price Calculator™️ has made it easy to calculate the value of a diamond before you buy or sell.

Understanding Diamond Cuts

The first of the '4Cs' in diamonds is the 'cut,' which refers to both the shape and quality of the diamond’s cut. To determine the price of a diamond, we need to identify its shape: is it round brilliant, princess, oval, or another cut? While identifying the shape is easy, assessing the cut quality—how well the diamond has been proportioned and polished—requires expert evaluation. Proper cut proportions enhance a diamond’s brilliance and fire.

Among these cuts, the round brilliant is the most popular and often the most expensive due to its ability to reflect maximum light. Other cuts, known as ‘fancy cuts,’ may be less in demand but offer unique styles. Since the diamond market is influenced by trends and rarity, the pricing of each cut varies accordingly.

How Our Diamond Price Calculator Works

Our online diamond price calculator uses a combination of data from the diamond market and the unique characteristics of your diamond to estimate its value. Discover how you can get the best value for a diamond, whether you are looking to buy a diamond for an engagement ring or selling a diamond that you own.

Diamond Price Calculator™️

Published and relied on since 2005, Luxe Diamonds' Diamond Price Calculator™️ has helped those seeking to buy or sell loose diamonds worldwide over 9.5 million times.

There's no catch, no email sign-up form, no 3-day free trial purchase; the diamond price calculator is free and easy to use with 24/7 access! The real-time cost value system provides immediate feedback with four simple diamond criteria: Shape, Carat, Color, and Clarity. For a more accurate diamond price, you can also submit additional details, including the diamond's graded proportion and its associating laboratory (e.g., GIA, EGS, etc.). You can find this information on the diamond's certification report or appraisal.

Once you've entered your diamond's characteristics, our diamond price calculator will use a complex algorithm to estimate its wholesale value. This algorithm takes into account factors such as the current market demand for diamonds, the diamond's rarity, and the quality of its cut.

Note: The calculator does not determine the value of synthetic lab-grown diamonds as they do not have a resale value.

Diamond Carat Weight

The second key factor in a diamond’s value is its carat weight. A carat represents the weight of the diamond, where 1 carat equals 0.20 grams. While larger diamonds tend to have a higher price, the price does not increase in direct proportion to weight. Instead, price brackets exist for different weight ranges, meaning a 1-carat diamond can cost significantly more than a 0.90-carat diamond due to market pricing grids.

Jewelers use the Rapaport pricing list to determine diamond value based on carat weight, with pricing shifting at specific carat brackets. For example, a 0.99-carat diamond and a 1.00-carat diamond may have a significant price difference despite only a 0.01-carat variation.

For buyers and sellers, understanding carat weight is crucial in making informed purchasing or selling decisions. Our price estimator helps determine diamond values within weight categories ranging from 0.20 to 5.99 carats.
